Tenerife Is The Most Popular Canary Island - And Here’s Why!

Are you jetting off to the Canary Islands this year? We don’t blame you! There’s so much to do and see.  About 5 million tourists visit the island of Tenerife each year, and that’s the most out of all the Canary Islands. This beautiful island has it all to offer - from lively towns, mountainous surroundings, long stretches of white sand and exciting water parks!

If you've chosen Tenerife for your holiday destination this year, you will be spoilt for choice when choosing places to visit. If you've never been before, below we have highlighted why Tenerife could be the next holiday destination perfect for you!

The Beaches

Tenerife has many beautiful beaches, perfect for a relaxing afternoon of sun, sea and sand. Many beaches in Tenerife are man-made and very sandy. There are some black beaches made from volcanic sand which are quite unique to see, but most are golden.

Playa de Las Vistas is situated south of the island and it is full with everything you could possibly need when going for a day at the beach! There are hammocks, umbrellas, showers and many inviting bars and restaurants.  If you’re looking for a thrilling afternoon, there is also a selection of water sports to choose from!

Playa de Las Teresitas is one of the most popular beaches on the island. The sand is extra white here as it was rejuvenated with sand from the Sahara desert, making it one of the most beautiful beaches to visit.  Las Teresitas is lined with palm trees, making it all the more picturesque, and the perfect paradise location.

The Towns

Anaga is the largest town in Tenerife; Situated at north of the Island, tourists will enjoy some very impressive sites here, including Castillo De San Andres and the Anaga Massif. There are many outdoor adventures to participate in such as surfing and diving, and then in the evening get a taste of the Tenerife night-life! Many activities await tourists at Anaga, Tenerife’s most popular destination!

Be sure to visit Garachico, which was once the wealthiest town in Tenerife. Garachico was engulfed in lava in 1706 but today it is one of Tenerife’s most popular day-trip destinations, where you can swim in rock pools which were carved from the lava!

La Laguna was once the capital of the island. This city is a Unesco World Heritage site where convents and beautifully preserved mansions stand, dating back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. These are now accompanied by tapas bars and antique shops, making it a lovely tourist location.

The Mountains and Volcanoes

Teide National Park is part of the Unesco World Heritage site. There is a 10-mile-wide volcanic crater which stands in the centre of the island. At the centre of this site,  the Mount Teide volcano rises to  12,198ft above sea level, making it Spain’s highest peak.  There is a cable car ride which takes visitors 3,937ft above the crater floor to see breath - taking views over the Spanish archipelago.

The small village of Masca balances on a rocky highland in the Teno Mountains. Masca can be accessed by one of Tenerife’s most nerve-testing roads. Here you will find a small museum, a handful of great restaurants and a brilliant hike down the gorge.

Cueva Del Viento is the fourth - largest volcanic tube in the world. The Cueva Del Viento runs for 11 miles in a three-tiered labyrinth of tunnels, beneath Icod De Los Vinos. There are guided tours around the tunnels, providing an insight into the history of one of Tenerife’s most iconic sites.

 The Shopping and Restaurants

If you’re a big holiday shopper, Santa Cruz is home to many of the larger department stores and shopping centres. If you like more traditional browsing, the markets in Tenerife are very popular and a great place to pick up a bargain.  The largest markets in the south of Tenerife are the Torviscas Market and Los Cristianos.

You will find a variety of different restaurants in Tenerife, offering cuisines from all different countries and cultures. From the traditional Canarian menu, to Japanese sushi and popular British foods, Tenerife will accommodate for all different tastes!

The Activities

From a lazy ride down the Mai Thai River to a slide which plummets you down a near-vertical 90ft drop, Siam Park is sure to offer you thrills and excitement for the whole family!
